Scrivenshaft Challenge Cycle IX - January 2007: "Magical Mythos"

Cycle Dates: 2 January 2007 - 31 January 2007
Entries Submitted: 8
Winners Announced: March 12, 2007

The Prompt

The Premise:
The Wizarding World is a one like no other, its mysteries and eccentricities shrouded from Muggle eyes by the tightest security. Through the eyes of Harry Potter, we have seen many of these unknown oddities, yet it is reasonable to imagine that what we know is only the tip of the iceberg.

The Challenge:
It is a time of celebration! Explore the traditions of Wizarding kind as never seen before - how, for example, does a family rejoice when a child shows his or her first signs of magic? What sort of odd meals are served at the outset of a New Year, or what ceremonies are performed at weddings, to bring good luck? Using canon through The Half-Blood Prince, focus upon how magic affects those special moments that Muggles take for granted and how these traditions change over time.

Your Limits:
1. All time periods are allowed, as are all characters, though Lily and James may not be used as primary characters.
2. All characters much be taken from canon, up to book six, though you are not restricted to solely canonical events. However, please make use of HP resources to keep actions and personalities as close to HBP-canon as possible.

Entry Rules/Regulations:

1. You may submit as many entries as you like.
2. Please do not submit an entry with a rating higher than R, though a rating no higher than PG-13 is strongly encouraged.
3. Please stay within the spirit of the prompt. Take advantage of its hints of personality and tone. Exploit these to your advantage.
4. Before submitting your entry, proofread it for spelling, punctuation, or grammatical mistakes.
5. Entries should be no longer than 4,000 words. Entries of over 4,000 words will be disqualified.
6. All entries must be received at scrivenshaft@unknowableroom.org by 11:59 CTS on January 31 to be included for judging.

The Award-Winners

Award-winning categories are explained on the main Scrivenshaft page.

Cheering Charm: "Bouncing" by Oxymoron

Why we loved it:

"I loved how Neville was portrayed as a young boy being forced to spend all his time with all older people, including his > Gran and his Great Aunt and Uncle." - anonymous. "Loved this piece. I love your Neville and how this is EXACTLY how I would have pictured young Neville and how he grew into the Neville we see in the books. Your characterization is wonderful and Enid and Algie and Gran are just brilliant." - anonymous. "I quite like the story as it was in the eyes of an eight year old when things are still ten times magical then what they really are." -anonymous.

Brilliance of Brevity: "A Little Child To Lead Them" by Lilydarling

Why we loved it:

"...The story is just so intense. This view of Petunia is beautiful and you have made into a person that I admire and love. I love the way she looks at the wizarding world in a very black and white style, of death and life and how she misses her sister." - anonymous. "Although it is less than 500 words, I believe that this story packs the most punch." - anonymous. "Loved it. Plain and simple... this showed a point of view so often lost in so many stories. - anonymous.

Food For Thought: "Streetlights of Eternity" by Vea

Why we loved it:

"I enjoyed reading this story, as it was something that I had never considered before." - anonymous. "I've never given Regulus much thought and I think this piece strikes the right cord with readers and invokes a lot of thought on him and how he felt to be thrust into something he wasn't entirely ready for when Sirius was disowned and
how the war changes everything. You've really touched a lot of bases here with this story and it is very well written." - anonymous. "Truly a good story. I enjoyed understanding the psych of Regulus, and it made me think more about why he did what he did with the horcrux." - anonymous.
