Scrivenshaft Challenge Cycle VII - September 2006 : "The True Rendition"
Cycle Dates: 29 August 2006 - 30 September 2006
Entries Submitted: 7
Winners Announced: October 31, 2006
The Prompt
The Premise:
It is a time of war, filled with actions that can shake the very foundations of spirit, with deeds done to help or hinder a cause that threaten even the strength of the beliefs that started the conflict. A time when pledges are renewed, made, and broken, when the character of every soul involved in the fight is tested, even bent under the pressure, and when even the strongest of faith face losing themselves along the way. A time when bravery - and cowardice - are paramount, the stories of each falling into place, combining to ultimately decide the outcome.
The Challenge:
It is your turn to tell the tale. Who has taken up the battle, and who has fled? Choose a character or group of characters from any applicable era to address. What set of secrets or beliefs are driving the character, and what deeds does the character commit because of them? How has the character changed through the course of war, if at all? Did the character rush into the fight without pausing to consider, or is the character an unwilling participant? Hero or villain, the story must be told.
Your Limits:
1. Lily, James, Harry, and Remus may not be used as a main character of your entry.
2. Events of your entry may not take place anywhere on the Hogwarts grounds.
3. There must be a character involved in your entry who is not fully human.
4. Please make use of HP resources to keep actions and personalities as close to HBP-canon as possible.

2. Please do not submit an entry with a rating higher than R.

The Award-Winners
Award-winning categories are explained on the main Scrivenshaft page.
Raising the Bar: "The Game" by WinglessFlight
Why we loved it:
"This was the entry I thought was actually rather different from the rest. You have this character we all know and love--Flitwick, how can you think anything but little, adorable man?--and the author turns him into this complex character with this shady sort of history that no one would expect." - anonymous. "This story was one-of-a-kind. Not only was it about a character I have never seen approached in fanfiction (Flitwick), but the concept about the unknown connection between the Wizarding World and World War Two. A hearty well-done to the author!" - anonymous. "Now, this is a stunner. It's perfectly Filius. It's so very creative how the author connects MUGGLE history to WIZARDING history! And it even fits! Oh, this is just too good to be true..." - anonymous.
Brilliance of Brevity: "Dance Through the End by Pantz
Why we loved it:
"This story was extremely poetic... It was short, interesting, and thought-provoking." - anonymous. "The first thing that intrigued me about this story was how it all seemed to be one big metaphor, comparing war to a dance. The writing style of the author is beautiful because of all the imagery they use throughout their entry." - anonymous. "The simplicity of this piece is astounding in its effectiveness." - anonymous.
Food For Thought: "Do Not Go Gentle" by Machiavelli Jr
Why we loved it:
"Just have to say- VERY good symbolism. I'm impressed." - anonymous. "It's one of those stories that makes you think - you have to pay attention to the characters in order to decide where their true loyalties lie, especially since the author doesn't name many of the secondary characters but rather describes them. The slight twist at the end where Susan turns out to be the last Death Eater is great as well and the author does a great job
encompassing the theme of never knowing which side of the war everyone's on." - anonymous.
Eureka!: "Forgiveness" by gileaderr113
Why we loved it:
I think this story did a fascinating job exploring each motivation of the character... Finally the idea of forgiveness is absolutely compelling." - anonymous. "I thought it was really inspired to take a character who no one knows much about--that no one would expect to really even want to know much about--and use him as the main character for this challenge." - anonymous.
