The Prompt

The Premise:

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince left so many questions unanswered, left so much hanging in the balance. Will Hogwarts reopen, and, if so, will Harry return? Where, and what, are all of the remaining Horcruxes? Will Ron and Hermione accompany Harry to destroy them (and will they go ahead and date already)? Is Snape good or evil - and for that matter, is Dumbledore really dead? And above all: who will triumph in the end? So many questions, and answers only to be found in the final installment of the Harry Potter series.

Or, they can be answered by you.

The Challenge:

Write a segment of The Deathly Hallows portraying what you think (or hope) will happen in this last book. Through the eyes of any character, explore remaining plotlines and answer the unanswered questions. Guide your readers to consider aspects of the Harry Potter books that they have never considered before. It is your turn to write the history of Harry Potter; meanwhile, the fate of Wizarding kind hangs in the balance.

Your Limits:
1. No MWPP-era this time. Keep in the "Trio" era - no time turners, etc. Use flashbacks only if they significantly contribute to the plot.
2. All characters must be taken from cannon up to book six. However, Harry Potter cannot be your primary character. This means that he can be the focus of the entry, but the entry cannot be written "through his eyes", so to speak, but rather through the eyes of another character.
3. There are a host of situations presented in the books on which you can base your entry. Please make use of HP resources to keep actions and personalities as close to HBP-canon as possible.

Entry Rules/Regulations:

1. You may submit as many entries as you like.
2. Please do not submit an entry with a rating higher than R, though a rating no higher than PG-13 is strongly encouraged.
3. Please stay within the spirit of the prompt. Take advantage of its hints of personality and tone. Exploit these to your advantage.
4. Before submitting your entry, proofread it for spelling, punctuation, or grammatical mistakes.
5. Entries should be no longer than 4,000 words. Entries of over 4,000 words will be disqualified.
6. All entries must be received at scrivenshaft@unknowableroom.org by 11:59 CTS on May 31 to be included for judging.

Why we loved it:

"I found this entry astounding; it gave me a completely new perspective of Draco outside of either the "he's just so misunderstood" or the "he's evil Death-Eater spawn" stereotypes. I thought this entry was simply wonderful, and I couldn't have enjoyed it more if it really did feature in the next book." - anonymous. "...[Draco] rings very true - even in his last moments he doesn't really *want* to repent or feel that it is necessary." - anonymous. "It's the kind of writing that kind of leaves you baffled at the end because you can't think of anything but... well, how great it is. The first line, 'Draco Malfoy never claimed to be invincible. Somehow, he thought this would save him,' was a great opening line, which totally set the mood for the entire story." - anonymous.
