Cycle Dates: 12 March 2007 - 15 April 2007

Winners Announced: May 23, 2007

The Prompt

The Premise:

"Imagine that Voldemort's powerful now. You don't know who his supporters are, you don't know who's working for him and who isn't; you know he can control people so that they do terrible things without being able to stop themselves. You're scared for yourself, and your family, and your friends. Every week, news comes of more deaths, more disappearances, more torturing... the Ministry of Magic's in disarray, they don't know what to do, they're trying to keep everything hidden from the Muggles, but meanwhile, Muggles are dying too. Terror everywhere... panic... confusion..."

- Sirius Black (Goblet of Fire pg. 527)

The Challenge:

All is not as it appears.

Paranoia runs rampant as plots are suspected, confirmed, denied, and the actions of those involved are altered accordingly. Choose a group of three to seven characters and explore the alliances (or subtle betrayals) that affect it. What plot or scheme motivates the primary character to act how he or she does, and how do these actions affect the group as a whole? What unforeseen events befall the character, and which events do not go as expected? Is the group working together for a common cause, or are the characters unwittingly setting themselves up for an unseen demise? And, most importantly... who can really be trusted?

Your Limits:
1. All time periods are allowed, as are all characters, though Lily and James may not be used as primary characters.
2. All characters much be taken from canon, up to book six. Though you are not restricted to solely canonical events, there are a host of situations presented in the books on which you can base your entry (this is suggested). Please make use of HP resources to keep actions and personalities as close to HBP-canon as possible.

Entry Rules/Regulations:

1. You may submit as many entries as you like.
2. Please do not submit an entry with a rating higher than R, though a rating no higher than PG-13 is strongly encouraged.
3. Please stay within the spirit of the prompt. Take advantage of its hints of personality and tone. Exploit these to your advantage.
4. Before submitting your entry, proofread it for spelling, punctuation, or grammatical mistakes.
5. Entries should be no longer than 4,000 words. Entries of over 4,000 words will be disqualified.
6. All entries must be received at scrivenshaft@unknowableroom.org by 11:59 CTS on April 15 to be included for judging.
