Hello everybody! This is a short update on Hourglass 2009.

We already have over 130 nominations, which is amazing. Thank you to everybody who nominated fics! Nominations will remain open until June 1. Go and nominate your favourite fics here.

We still need judges! Everybody who has an Unknowable Room account is eligible to be a judge. Signing up for an account is free and only takes a few seconds. You can choose which and how many categories you would like to judge, and you have from June 10 to July 15 to finish. This is your chance to have a say in who gets an award! The more judges, the fairer and better the results! Therefore, please consider joining the judging pool. A huge thank you to everybody who already volunteered!

For more information about the Hourglass Awards, go here.

You can reach us in the comments, or send an email to hourglass[at]unknowableroom.org.

UPDATE: We have added new categories for AU (Alternate Universe) and NC-17 fanfiction.

Hello, everybody! Things have been quiet for a while now, and I apologise for that, but I bring good news!

You can now nominate your favourite fics for the 2008 cycle of the Hourglass Awards here!

Nominations end on March 31st. If you wish to add your name to the Hourglass judging pool, click here! Judges will have from March 31st to May 10th to judge the fics in the categories they have been assigned to.

A few simple rules:

1. Hourglass is open to all corners of the fandom—all ships, all eras. We aren't trying to honour the best UR fics. Check your LiveJournal flists, your favourite fanfiction rec sites, other archives and forums! We're looking for diversity, and the Awards are an opportunity to spotlight fics that many of us may not yet have had the chance to read.

2. Fics nominated last year cannot be nominated again. I will edit this post with a full list of last years' fics, but the form to which I linked above will in all likelihood point out the error if you attempt to nominate one such fic.

3. You cannot nominate your own fics.

4. We have seven categories this year:
a) Best Romance Fic: Any fic prominently featuring a male/female romance.
b) Best Slash Romance Fic: Fics that feature slash relationships either between males or females.
c) Best Drama Fic: Fics should have their ups and downs here and be capable of leaving a feeling of timelessness and excitement on the audience.
d) Best Angst Fic: These fics are different from dramas in that they are at times hopeless and without a happy ending. They should probe the darkest layers of the fandom, leaving a dark impression left on the audience.
e) Best Comedy or Parody Fic: In a nutshell, fics that have the main goal of making people laugh or fics that satirize common fanon clichés, other fics, or even canon itself.
f) Best Gen Fic: Fics that do not feature romance with prominence—character studies, usually somewhat introspective. Friendship fics may also be nominated in this category.
g) Best Drabble or Drabble Collection: Brilliance in brevity! Fics in this category should have no more than one thousand words (per drabble, in case of a collection of them), and use every single one of them in a way that leaves the reader flabbergasted and in wonder.

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me, or send an email to hourglass at unkowableroom.org. Happy nominating!
