I have sent e-mails all the judges (make sure to check your 'Junk' folder!). The Hourglass Awards voting page is up and running! If you volunteered, click here to see which categories you will judge. The page can also be accessed via the MemCP ("Judge Hourglass!"). Feel free to start voting!

Judges: I'd recommend that you reread all the fics you're being asked to evaluate. Please take your time to attribute a rating to every criterion; your votes are due on June 24.

If you have any suggestions, comments or questions, feel free to comment on this post, PM me, post at the forums or drop us a line at hourglass at unknowableroom.org!

Also, the categories are split between some of the admins; please contact them directly if you have content- or fic-related questions: Bee is in charge of Romance and Drama; Erin will supervise One-Shots and Overall; Lynn, Comedy; Runi, Drabbles and Parodies. I'm overseeing Angst, NC-17 and Novel-length.

Revival of the Mentoring Program!

Hola, dears. It's been quite a while since anyone's heard a peep out of me, hasn't it? Long story short, I've been MIA since last August due to the (slightly crazy) academic schedule I kept during the '06-'07 school year, and I just couldn't invest all the time I used to in running the Mentoring Program; and for that, I apologize most sincerely. Much as it chagrins me to say this, I wouldn't be surprised if some of our newer members hadn't known I'm an admin at all. *Clears throat* That needs fixing ASAP.

So, now that I'm back in action for the summer (but I can't make any guarantees that I'll be able to commit to the site beyond June 25th, since that's when I go back to school for more classes), here's what's going down:

  • Mentor chats. They're happening again! A topic, date, and time for the first one have yet to be fixed. If you're interested in being part of the session, vote in the polls and let me know what you'd like to discuss and when you'll be able to do so. Please remember that it's difficult to make the sessions convenient for everyone, particularly when our participating members live in time zones located on the opposite side of the planet--but I'll do my very best to make the discussions available to everyone. Post-discussion notes, as always, will be posted as soon as I've written them up. :)

  • Mentoring-oriented livejournal communities, to be announced once arrangements have been made. It's been generally difficult to keep track of all the goings-on in the program simply by using email, so I've decided to experiment with new methods.

    • A mentors-only community: To get active mentors together so that they can discuss the techniques they find work best with their apprentices, difficulties their apprentices might be having with a particular writing task and possible solutions to those problems, different writing styles/techniques, etcetera.

    • A mentors and apprentice community: Open to all mentors and apprentices, including apprentices who haven't been assigned a mentor yet. Here, apprentices could post questions, and any mentor who sees them can post suggestions. Likewise, mentors can post suggestions for writing exercises, advice, etcetera.

    • An apprentices-only community: I'm not sure if this'll be necessary, but it could provide an open forum for apprentices to talk amongst themselves about anything that's writing-related. If it helps foster discussion (read: discussion, not hijacking), then hey, it can't hurt, right?

Membership in these communities will be completely voluntary--if you've joined but find that you no longer have the time or desire to be a member, nobody will stop you from leaving. So if you're involved/interested in the program, check out the polls and vote for what you'd like to see in the ways of lj communities, too.

  • A re-vamp of the Essays & Columns section. I can't make any guarantees that we'll be able to get it off the ground in a month or less, but time and volunteers allowing, we'll see if we can't at least make a dent. :) More information soon to come.

All this being said, hello again! It's great to be back, and I hope the summer's treating you all well!

Always,
- Jenna

I'm pleased to announce the winners of Cycle X of the Scrivenshaft Challenges!

I'm sorry it took so long to get these results out; I promise that the results for the next cycle will be announced much more promptly.

Speaking of the next cycle, don't forget that the May cycle of the Challenges closes on the 31st. Get those entries in! (And remember, you can always sign up for the Judging Pool if you can't write an entry.)

Have a great day,
Erin

Hourglass schedule

Due to problems with some of the authors and nominations, and difficulties regarding the vote input system, we have defined the following schedule for the Hourglass Awards:

May 27: e-mails will have already been sent to all the judges, confirming which category they will judge and providing them with the necessary links for vote input.
June 24: deadline for sending in Hourglass votesheets.
First week of July: announcement of the winners.

Because of this delay (we're so sorry!), we've decided to reopen for a few days the inscriptions to the judging pool! Some people complained that they feared Hourglass voting would interfere with their finals; we hope the new schedule will avoid that problem. You can also nominate a few more fics, if you so wish!

So, if you haven't already... sign up today, or nominate any fics you may have forgotten last time!

Nominations and inscriptions are now closed.

Stay tuned for the results of the last Challenge! Questions or comments regarding the prompt? Just let me know below.

Have fun,
Erin
