Ahem. Today is a good one. :)

Welcome to the mentoring staff, Beedaily! It's a pleasure and an honor to have you along; words really can't express.

Also, congrats again to our other recent mentors: Carondelet and Chelime, who may not have received as much recognition as they ought to in the midst of all this revamping. We appreciate you. :)

The Mentoring Herald has also been updated. More information will be available soon on that front.

Cheers, everyone!

Look! It's a Mod that you never see or hear from! =)

Hey, everyone, I just wanted to let you know that the FAQ's page is now up. You can link to it from the Help page.

So far, the FAQ's consist of questions relating to copywrite and posting with lyrics. Explanation of the current -snazzyy- dots is also there.

As more questions arise, the page will be updated.

And if the FAQ's don't help you, just let us know. =)

The Dot System

Review TeamPermanent AccountSolarism

We have a new feature here at UR.org.

Instead of the * and ` to indicate paid and permanent accounts, we've recently implemented something called the dot system. The dot system is sort of cool--you get to colllect little dots like badges the more that you participate around the site. They follow your username around on the site so everyone can know what you've done and how you've contributed. Sounds cool, eh?

Currently, these are the dots you can have:

  • Light blue dot = paid account.
  • Dark blue dot = permanent account.
  • Purple dot = site administrator.
  • Dark red dot = Scrivenshaft Award winner.
  • Light red dot = Hourglass Award winner.

Coming soon, we'll have dots for these things:

  • Hourglass Award nominee. (You only get one dot even if you're nominated multiple times.)
  • Scrivenshaft participant? (You only get one dot even if you've participated multiple times.)
  • Unknowable Room mentor?
  • Unknowable Room apprentice?
  • Perfect Imagination beta reader?
  • Essay and column writer?

The ones with question marks haven't been really cleared yet, but Cine, the other admins and I will definitely talk about them. :) The good thing about the dots is that they're so tiny that they don't really look cluttered no matter how many you have. We hope that when we make more dots available, you'll be more eager to collect them (in other words, you'll participate more).

So, UR. Do you like the dot system idea? Do you have any questions or comments? What are your suggestions for other kinds of dots? Let us know by commenting on this entry.

Thanks!

In regard to the Check Application Status form, I've replied to every request we've received so far, so there should be a notice from mentors@unknowableroom.org in your inboxes. If for some reason there isn't, check your spam folders, because it might be in there...and if not, comment here, and I'll send another notice from silverspinner@gmail.com, which I've set up as an alternative UR mailing account. If all else fails, I'll keep in touch with you there. :/

That said, keep your eyes peeled for additional updates on the mentoring program this weekend. There's a demand for mentors that we currently can't meet, and the status checker has revealed a number of rather appalling screwups in communication. To address the problem of wait-listed and strung-along apprentices, I've decided to expand the program beyond the one-on-one buddy system we started with and increase the on-site resources available to apprentices in general. I'm hoping that, when all the major additions are made, UR will have something akin to an open classroom or workshop, ideally with the mentors themselves dropping in from time to time to offer guidance.

The details ought to be posted on the Mentoring Herald sometime tomorrow. 'Til then!

First, we have an announcement regardining administration. Most of you are aware that originally, 9 moderators came together to creat the Great Break LiveJournal community and, eventually, The Unknowable Room. One of our number, Sarinileni, has left us. Outside commitments do not leave her much time to work on UR.org, and therefore, she is no longer a moderator or administrator here.

However, in her place, we have Cine. For all intents and purposes, Cine has always been an administrator here--she's the one that codes everything and fixes the serious errors. We consider her as essential to this archive as any of the original admins. With that said, please consider her the "9th and final" administrator from now on. :) We love you, Cine.

I have a few quick announcements concerning other parts of the site.

  • Tagboards for paid and permanent accounts are currently disabled on this new layout. Cine is doing her best to get them back up again. Hold tight.
  • We had a serious error with site registration, which has now been fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience. Prospective members should be able to sign up without a hitch now.
  • We're working on the various site glitches, such as the NC-17 page being down. Please be patient. :)
  • A link to report site errors will be appearing soon on the main page. Please utilize this to report errors and problems you encounter on the site.
  • I'm working on the Hourglass Awards. Keep refreshing the page and you'll keep seeing new fics being added. I hope to be done with the final list within an hour.
  • November Scrivenshaft challenge entries have been judged. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Please leave any and all comments and suggestions here so we can know what you guys want. :)

Changes in the Mentoring Program

There's goodly amount of news on the mentoring front tonight:

First, I've created an updates page that's devoted exclusively to the Mentoring Program. Applicants for apprentice- and mentorship can check their status there and get news on changes in the workings of the program itself. It'll be in the interest of everyone concerned with the program to check on this page regularly.

Second, I've revamped the mentoring forum and hope to call some attention to it. I think I've written this a total of three times now, but we need a centralized and easily accessible location for mentors and apprentices to check in with the admins every week or two--hence my banging on about private messages, open forum discussions, etc., etc. in my other news posts. You can link to the forum here; all mentors, please head over there and check in as soon as possible.

Last--but most definitely not least--the belated announcement of two new mentors! Welcome to the UR staff, Chelime and Carondelet! It's an honor to have you with us!

'Til next time! :)

Checking In

Where the heck have the mods been lately, eh?

I know, I know. If it wasn't for Cine's brilliant new layouts, I expect we'd be seeing a few revolts by now. We're sorry. Things happen--life happens. That's not an excuse, we know, but at least it's something to say.

I've really dropped the ball on the Hourglass Awards. This weekend I have some spare time, so I'm going to really update it and start up the judging with my fellow mods. We aren't expecting to announce the winners until early March, so... sit tight!

New polls, more layout skins, special features, frequent newsposts, and some explanations about administration will be coming in the next few days. Seriously.

Aaand, it is up!
I'm really sorry for the extended downtime, but at least here it finally is! Yeah, it is still buggy. Yeah, the skin currently only comes in green. But that will all change in the next days, and I really thought getting the site up again might be the most important thing right now. :)

If you should stumble over any error, bug or formatting error, please comment on this post and tell me about it. :D And, of course, if you feel like commenting on the layout, you are perfectly allowed to do that too. I love feedback.

Constructive Criticism

Just to let everyone know, I've created a new constructive criticism forum for anyone who's interested. The thread originally started by Eden in the Self-Promotion section has been moved to Writing Fanfiction --> Constructive Criticism. If you'd like some concrit for your story, head over there and post a link.

ETA: I've added a separate forum for discussing reviews (Writing Fanfiction --> Reviews) --what constitutes a good vs. bad one, a flame vs. a harsh critique, the art of reviewing, etc. Anything pertinent to the subject of feedback goes, so long as we don't have any mudslinging contests. Have at it. :)

Cheers!

Paid Accounts

Paid Unknowable Room accounts are now available!

Yes, we finally have paid accounts available for anyone who wants one! Our system of purchasing is currently a little complicated, but head on over to the new paid accounts page to see what all the fuss is about. We guarantee it'll be worth your money. All of the revenue the orders generate will go toward paying for the humungous site costs we wrack up ever year.

Thanks for all the patience guys. We're all so proud right now.
