The administrators of UR.org are very proud to announce that we have a new member on our staff!

PotterChick958 is our Publicity Manager and will be handling all of our representation to the fandom. She is a highly qualified individual who is dedicated to the archive and interested in continuing to spread the news about our mission and our grand opening. It is her job to make sure that the fandom knows we're here.

Thanks for all of your dedication, Amanda. We look forward to working with you!

More job appointments will be announced soon.

We've been open for roughly 21 hours and are at exactly 200 members with a new user joining every few minutes. :) We are so pleased that so many of you decided to come out for the opening day. It's such an exciting thing to be able to share this all with you finally. After so many months of working on it, we're finally up and operating!

Thanks for all of the patience you guys have demonstrated. We realize that there are a lot of flaws and imperfections around the site still and are doing our best to fix them. We won't be able to fix most of them until after all of this Halloween holiday stuff has died down, but after that, things should start picking up.

I also wanted to mention that since we have such a huge influx of users and fics right now, authors shouldn't be discouraged if they don't receive many reviews over the next few days. When you do receive a review, feel free to utilize the "Manage Reviews" options under your Review section in your MemCP. From there, you can reply to reviews. Also under the Review section, you can click on "Survey Results" to view the poll responses on each of your stories.

Don't freak out if the poll responses aren't working or if they give you an error message right now. That just means that no one has filled out the poll yet. We're working on fixing these errors along with all the rest.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank both Cine and Juli for all of their work on UR.org. Without them, this website wouldn't have been possible. We love you, girls.

Happy Halloween, Unknowable Room!

What's Going On

Change of plans.

Unfortunately, we can't seem to get into contact with Cine, our coder. She lives in Norway, so it seems as though she missed all of our earlier e-mails and went straight to sleep. Without her here to help us with the php coding, we cannot take the unique registration code element off of the registration page. This does NOT mean that UR will remain closed. It just means that it's going to be a little more difficult to open up an account tonight.

Since we are anticipating difficulties, starting right now, users may go to TGB and comment on the entry that looks a lot like this one for their unique access code. ANYONE can ask us for a code and they will get one. :) If you are not a member of TGB, you may e-mail me at solarism@unknowableroom.org for your unique access code, or send us a message on AIM at kisscontagiously, zazenica or everblue3. I will get everyone who e-mails / IMs an access code within the next 5 hours, and the rest will be given tomorrow morning.

You can then use the access code you receive to sign up for a UR.org account. After logging into your new UR.org account, please also sign up over at the forums using the same account.

We are sorry for this inconvenience but it is unavoidable and we are doing the best that we can to get you all in anyway. We're managing the traffic to the best of our abilities, so please be patient. Thank you for your understanding in advance.

In all hopefulness, this problem will be resolved sometime inside the next 24 hours and you will be able to sign up for an account on the site regularly. When that is available, we will let you know. Thanks!

Congratulations to our three new mentors!

Drumroll, please...

Grimm Sister, author of Lion-Hearted and A Chance You Only Get Once
Oy Angelina, author of Pensieve and Snogwarts, a Parody,
and Twinsuns, author of My Deliverance and My Terrible Secret.

It's wonderful to see what a talented staff we're building up. The other mods and I were positively thrilled to see these applications. Welcome, you three; we're honored to have you aboard!

Over the course of the next week or so, we'll be conducting interviews with several other volunteers, in all likelihood making at least some of them mentors as well. We'll be sure to announce and introduce them once we've gotten everything straightened out. Stay tuned for updates; as usual, they'll be posted here on the front page.

Many, many cheers,
- Jenna

One Day Left

One day.

We've come such a long way. Sometimes, I log on before I go to school in the morning just so that I can stare at this archive and wonder how on earth it all materialized. I was a part of the process from day one, always with at least a finger in whatever was going on, and yet... it still seems amazing to me that we accomplished it. After so many months of waiting, of promises, of delays, and of changes, we've finally reached a point where we can open UR.org to the public. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am.

In the spirit of opening day, these are some the activities and updates you can expect to begin at 12 AM EST:

  • UR.org opens to the public.
  • All new polls posted.
  • 3 new mentors announced & introduced.
  • New UR.org staff member announced & introduced.
  • Updated pages/sections across the board.
  • Scrivenshaft Challenge winners posted for September cycle.
  • November Scrivenshaft Challenge posted.
  • Hourglass policies updated & announced.
  • One shot fic posted by me, because I am really that excited. :D

Please note that even though we are opening UR.org to the public, not all parts of the site are complete yet. The site is a work in progress and will continue to be one for some time. We do not currently have fanart services available, are still working out kinks in coding and practical use, have not completed all site sections yet, and reserve the right to change and edit the site at our will indefinitely. We think that the important thing is allowing users to register for accounts, upload fics, review other fics, use the forums, and start signing up for some of our programs. The site will continue to get better as time goes on, as we hope you will all stick around to see. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Don't forget to take a banner. :)

See you tomorrow!

Mentors

Calling all who are interested in becoming mentors!

...Because we mods are going to need help.

We're looking for experienced, thoughtful authors who are willing to spend some time (several hours per week) with less experienced authors to help them improve and diversify their writing. Mentors need to be devoted, well-read, good-natured, and skilled writers; if this sounds like you, don't hesitate to sign up here. The application is meant to give us an idea of what you're good at and which apprentices you might work best with. Don't be shy!

The perks? A one-year paid account, which we'll renew if you stay longer. We're still working on setting up all the benefits, but so far, we have:

  • 15 usericons
  • Profile picture
  • Site e-mail address
  • Up to 300 fics on your favorites list
  • Up to 300 authors on your favorites list
  • Up to 15 stories in your scrapbook (that is, 15 stories idling in your document manager)

Heck, why not give it a shot? :)

Cheers,
- Jenna

Education Philosophy

I think I've always been one of the most eager to point out how important education is to this archive. Since the earliest days of TGB, the UR.org administrators (then the TGB moderators) bonded together under our shared belief in how important this particular pillar of fanfiction is. We decided that the idea of education so important that we shaped a whole section of the archive around it. We believe that no matter how young or old, no matter how famous or obscure, any individual who comes to this site can benefit from a strong educational system. We believe that education is the key to making the fandom at large a better place.

So many people spend a great deal of their time complaining about the poor quality of stories found on the internet (especially at fanfiction.net, but how many try to do something to fix the way the system works? We're at least trying to do that. Please bear with us while we get the kinks worked out, but in the end, we hope that our compendiums will help aid the fandom at large. We mean to provide virtual libraries full of educational documents, tools and dictionaries, an extremely reliable beta reader service, and an individualized system of intense mentoring given to our users completely for free. As the archive matures, we will continue to add more on to the education part of UR, and we hope that you will continue to support us in our ventures.

Your feedback is, of course, always appreciated.

In the spirit of all of the above, we have some announcements:

  • Special advanced review system is completed. This gives authors extensive feedback in hopes of giving them a better idea of what they need to work on in their writing.
  • The Mentoring Program is officially completed. We are now accepting applications here. It's very in depth!
  • Writer's Resources page has been updated.
  • Check out updates to the Essays & Columns page sometime this weekend. We have some jewels for you.

All 9 administrators are very proud that we have come so far with the site. We've been planning it and building it since April 2005 when the TGB livejournal community was first opened. Since then, we have gained almost 1000 members and have had considerable publicity throughout the fandom because of our various projects and ideals. We cannot be happier with all that we have accomplished as an archive and as a community. Thank you all so much.

UR.org will open to the public in 9 days. Halloween felt so fitting... we hope you share our sentiments.

Have a good weekend, guys. We'll update soon.

Getting Closer...

Hi everyone.

As we grow closer to our October 31st grand opening, we're working hard to complete the site. Cine has been working on the Alerts and Favorites system. You can see the beginnings of what she's doing by clicking on any userprofile. Juli has been working on site graphics, which now sit proudly at the top at most of our main site pages. She's also working on new graphics for merchandise over at our CafePress shop... which you guys should definitely check out! All of the merchandise will have UR.org logos on it soon, so look out for that. All of the money that we make from the shop goes right back to the site, incidentally. We're completely nonprofit.

Anyway. I've been working on the Hourglass Awards. It's tough to transition from the old LiveJournal list because some of the fics have simply vanished off the internet since way back then. When fanfiction.net went through that deletion spree, many good fics were lost (yeah, like I need to tell you guys that--you know), including some that were nominated for certain awards. I'm also having problems finding contact information for some of the authors. Furthermore, the old categories have become an issue, mostly because the Hourglass Awards were MWPP-exclusive before. I've created a new poll so that I can get your opinion on whether or not the awards should remain MWPP-era exclusive. Let me know what you think so that I can make adjustments as necessary.

Holly is hard at work on the Scrivenshaft Challenge page. I've noticed that many of the winning authors have picked up their graphics (compliments of our resident graphic designer, Juli). Good work, everyone! I'm proud of everyone who participated. Voting for the current round of Scrivenshaft entries will commence shortly. If you signed up to be in the voting pool, please watch your inbox for an invitation to join in the voting! We can't wait to see what you think of the entries this time around.

Jenna and Christy have been working on other site elements. You might have noticed a new resource page for authors courtesy of Jenna or the new Help section courtesy of Christy. All site content pages are being diligently worked on. Keep checking them to see the progress we're making. :)

Speaking of progress, check out the Site Statistics category on the right-hand column on the index page! As of today, we have 31 registered authors and 32 fics. I'm proud of all we've been through together. Here's to the beta authors--thank you all for your hard work in helping us work the bugs out of the site. We would not have been able to open so quickly if not for your help.

Thanks for everything, friends! It's been one heck of a journey. :)

UnknowableRoom will open to the public on October 31st, 2005.

Stay tuned for more announcements.

Oh my, we have such things planned you wouldn't believe!

I would be excited if I was you. Yes, yes I would, indeed... Hmmm. Hm. Hm.

Courtesy of Juli, we have some promotional banners that you can use to link back to UR.org with. Please save them to your own server (like Photobucket) and place them wherever you like, such as on your LiveJournal userinfo or personal website. Thanks!

We now have a special advanced reviewing system. Please check it out while you're browsing the site! Authors, you can now click on Reviews under your MemCP to see all of the special features we have available for you - including the ability to respond to and delete reviews, and view the advanced poll results you've received. Let us know what you think!

Also, authors, if you are having trouble logging in, it is probably because we fixed your account names. ie: beatrix is now BeatrixBloxam, christycor is now ChristyCorr, and etc. You can try to plug in your username in that format, but if you are still having problems, please e-mail me so that I can get you logged in again. Also, all new sign ups can have their usernames up to 35 characters to avoid those nasty cut offs we had before. Enjoy. :)

We Care

Well, sorry to those who wanted to see another admin make an update on the news page, but eh. Here I am. [Keep voting in that poll, and when we get more votes, we'll prod the most-wanted admin into posting or something. Never fear.]

I wanted to thank everyone who has signed up to write an essay for the Education section of the site. If you head over to the Essays & Columns page, you can see what all the commotion is about. [I update the list daily.] The essays will be posted as soon as they get finished and proofread... but there's really no limit. Keep the essays coming. If you have a specific, interesting idea, e-mail me about it and let me know. Anything fanfiction or fandom related goes--or, for that matter, anything that will help people become better writers, really. Want to write about parallelism? By all means, go for it. Just let me know.

Some of you are rather cantankerous these days, eh? I've noticed that most of our poll results are positive, but some people remain consistently negative in their voting. Gee, guys. Cheer the heck up, won't you? For the record, the responses that we receive in the polls help guide the direction of the archive. If the overwhelming majority of users want new authors to be randomly spotlighted, for instance, chances are they're going to be randomly spotlighted.

As you can imagine, we care about your vote. We want to know what you want from us. Help us help you. You get the picture.

On that note, if you have an idea for a poll, please e-mail it to unknowableroom@gmail.com and we'll work to get it posted. :)

Last, I'd like to announce that we are officially beginning to invite even more authors to join the site. Look for new authors and new fics in the next week or so. We're very excited that we're at a point where we can begin to allow more and more people to sign up--it means that we're making progress and moving toward our ultimate goal of opening the site up to the world at large.

Hey, man. I'm excited, at least.

Hope you all had an excellent weekend.

Love,

Dede

Preventing Mutiny

Review TeamPermanent AccountSolarism

Yep. We realize you're about ready to overthrow us & whatnot. We're sorry.

In the spirit of preventing mutiny, I've become somewhat innovative. [I would pay attention to this part. It might be somewhat exciting.] You might have noticed that under our Education tab, we have a space for Essays & Columns. We originally intended most of these to be written by the veteran fanfiction authors in order to help out the newbies, but let's face it: the site needs some sprucing up right now. Wouldn't you all agree?

Here's the deal. While we work on the techy aspects and wade through the piles of dumb e-mails we're still getting about how to get access codes for the site, we want those of you who are bored, interested, and good essayists to come work for us. We're setting up a system of roving reporters, sort of. The first step is to e-mail us at xsolarismxATgmail.com so that we can assign you an interesting, fanfiction or fandom related essay or column to write. If you send us a draft and it's correct and well-written, we'll put it up on the site.

The point is to start compiling an extensive archive of both objective and subjective assistance and advice for other authors and members of the fandom. We're interested in providing all of our users with reliable, insightful articles of information in order to get us closer to our main goal of educating everyone who wants to be educated. Sounds simple enough, right? That's because it is. :D

So. Not much to do this weekend? Come work for UnknowableRoom. The perks include getting your name (and/or penname) published on the site rather permanently, aiding your fellow readers and writers, and contributing to the emerging culture of the archive. This is landmark, guys! Get involved. If nothing else, it'll be something to tell the future generations about. Heh.

What are you waiting for? Get started today!
