I definitely thought you meant it was a turnon when your family smokes, which was equally confusing and disturbing.

I think smoking can look sexy on film or in a photo, where it's just... ...y'know, sexy. But in real life it comes with all the nasty side-effects like cancer and smelling of smoke (which is apparently a turn-on for many but definitely not for me) and bad teeth, so... ick. Pass.

And man Maya that would be all kinds of wrong.

Haha, I thought that too when I first read it.

About smoking... I get that a lot of horrible diseases stem from it, and I personally don't smoke (though I did for like, a week in high school) but it is undeniably sexy.

Smoking as an image can be sexy, but seeing the childish boys in my year etc smoke up like they're Bad Ass just makes me think they're immature children trying to play at being adult and cool.

Eh, well... you can smoke when you're eighteen in the US, and my peers are pretty much reaching / passing that threshold, so I don't see it as trying too hard anymore. Now, if they want to smoke, they can.

I didn't think about the bad teeth...

I think smoking is generally out of style around here, at least in comparison to how it apparently was in the late 90s, accoding to my friend's sister-in-law. She's an ex-smoker and she's what, ten years older than us, about? She said when she started in highschool basically everyone smoked, we said told her it's not really like that anymore. There were maybe 50 or so regulars of the smoking area, but that's out of a student body of ~1,200, so it was a pretty small group. There are probably a few more that smoke but not at school, but in general it wasn't really regarded as something cool or prestigious or rebellious in the way marijuana/alcohol was. Even those who did smoke generally didn't think it was ... y'know, cool or a status symbol, and lots of them wanted to quit but couldn't (be bothered).

One of my favourite moments in grade 11 Media Studies was when we did the tobacco unit and after hearing person after person bitch about second-hand smoking and the advertismenets tobacco companies use and blah blah, this girl raises her hand and says all defensively "Well my parents both smoked all my life and I've only got asthma." It was pretty amazing. (She was also infamous for once, during a discussion of a teenage girl who'd gone missing from the area, told us that her dad was psychic and he knew where the girls' body was but he hadn't told police because they wouldn't believe him.)

LIRL, I see him just kind of lounging by the side of the lake, dipping in a tumbler every so often.
