Merry Christmas, Corie (TopazEyez)!
Kindhearted
Kindhearted.
He called her kindhearted.
The nerve.
Out of all the acceptable descriptions possible — he chose kindhearted.
Who does he think he is?
Her grandfather?
Kindhearted.
Kindhearted.
It's practically an insult on par with 'well...er...she's got a great personality.'
Nay, it was worse.
Much.
He could have said anything else.
Anything.
Anything.
'Lily, you're nice; Lily, you're funny; Lily, you're smart... pretty... amazing... hot?'
But no.
Instead, 'Lily, you're kindhearted.'
The nerve.
The aforementioned kindhearted Lily was in the process of eating formally boiled, now mashed, potatoes. ('Eating' was more accurately described as a venting of uncontrolled kindhearted tendencies.)
Every few moments she chose to stare not-so-subtly at the self-assigned characteristic-giver™.
The nerve.
She had a few characteristics for him.
Some pretty vivid ones.
Kindhearted?
Kindhearted!
You call just anyone that.
Anyone!
The nerve.
Cornering her after a Heads' meeting - in a corner no less! – and making her heart beat all fast, and making her feel all weird, only to say, 'Lily, you're kindhearted.'
Talk about anti-climatic!
The cornering!
The leaning!
In a corner!
He didn't even bother to use a broader vocabulary.
Kindhearted.
Kindhearted!
The nerve.
The self-assigned characteristic-giver™ chose that moment to walk out of the Great Hall.
Now was her chance.
She'd show him 'kindhearted'.
What's the best way to proceed?
Shout his name?
That would be authoritative.
Not kindhearted in the least.
'Hey, Potter!'
He turns.
She moves forward.
Now who's the one doing the cornering?
Now he's smiling?
Why is he smiling?
Just when she was about to tell him how kindhearted she really was!
He's looking up.
She decides to too.
She thinks cornering was a bad move.
Ah, mistletoe.
(It was December. How did that escape her notice? Oh yes, she was busy ranting. Funny how that requires so much focus.)
Mistletoe...
How obvious.
Typical.
Obviously typical.
How cliché.
She was above clichés.
She so was.
So, so, above...
(But apparently Potter wasn't. Apparently Potter acts upon them)
Cornering wasn't so bad.
Could have been worse.
Maybe she should do some more of it.
The cornering that is.
He was smiling.
Still.
It seemed like she should say something.
She should...
But what?
Choosing the right word can be hard.
James Potter has experienced this countless times.
(Most recently following a Heads' meeting where he called the girl he loved 'kindhearted' of all things.)
Lily Evans was not as exposed to such a dilemma,
But she managed just fine.
'James...you're so... James.'
