55. Bluffing

Notes: This is the 100-word version of a sort-of companion to Valedictory that I started to write and then... well, then I decided to compress it into 100 words.

He could get through this if he knew when it was going to end (with his death, not with theirs; the alternative’s too horrible to consider).
How long will he have to act like everything is fine when really he’s more terrified, more alone than he can ever recall being? How long will he have to act like he isn’t missing them – his brother, his sister, his godson, his family – when really he aches for them?
He closes his eyes and swallows his emotions with his Firewhisky. He’ll be a proper Black, just this once, and forget to feel.
